From the pre-digital age, printed directories and thematic pamphlets were provided by distributors and production units, such as the Association des Trois Mondes in Paris who would provide a contextual article and a list of films on a particular theme. (eg. La Palestine Vue Par Son Cinema [Palestine seen through its Cinema] Cannes 2001). In the 1980s and the 1990s there was talk of Black film but no indications of where they were to be found. In response to this June Givanni collated the first Black and Asian Film & Video List in 1988 and the second edition in 1990, both were made available through the BFI. Some resources are especially compiled anniversary lists – such as the 1987 Third World Newsreel’s Twentieth Anniversary Issue of their Programme Guide concerning films from 1967.

53 Lists have been catalogued to date.
